Sympathy-Baiting on SilverSingles
A serious personal tragedy is disclosed unusually early and used repeatedly afterward to explain behavior or deflect scrutiny. On SilverSingles, where the dominant catfish pattern is widower/retired-professional personas targeted at an older, asset-holding user base, this tactic is a common companion to that pattern. SilverSingles has no native video-call feature, so testing for this tactic usually means proposing a call on a separate app instead.
Counter-Move
A real tragic backstory does not require immediate financial or emotional deference — sympathy and scrutiny are not mutually exclusive.
