Small Ask First on WhatsApp
An initial request is modest and easy to justify (phone credit, a small transfer) and is used as a precedent for a larger ask soon after. On WhatsApp, where the dominant catfish pattern is non-fixed VoIP numbers used to route the conversation off the original dating platform, this tactic is a common companion to that pattern. WhatsApp supports live video calling in-app, so a live call is the fastest way to test for this tactic directly.
Counter-Move
Treat any financial request, however small, as the actual first data point rather than an exception to note and move past.
